Dinuga de Silva wins Global Poster Contest

Dinuga de Silva, a 5 year old pre-school student from Sri Lanka won first place at the World Food Day 2018 Global Poster Contest. The poster contest is held annually by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to coincide with World Food Day on October 16. Last year the contest, which was held under the theme “Our Actions are Our Future. A Zero Hunger World by 2030 is possible,” received over 8000 entries from 118 countries.

Dinuga de Silva who is a student of the Little Einsteins Montesorri, in Pelawatta, Battaramulla was placed first in the 5 – 8 years age category at the competition. The certificate and prize were presented to Dinuga by Nina Brandstrup, the FAO Representative to Sri Lanka and the Maldives.

Speaking at the Prize Giving Ceremony held at the UN Compound in Colombo, Ms Brandstrup said, “FAO believes in the power of the younger generation from every country, from all walks of life. Young people are the adults of tomorrow and they will inherit the Earth. World Food Day reminded the world that ending all forms of hunger and malnutrition is possible if we work together. Dinuga brought this message to light through his poster which illustrated how producing and consuming nutritious food can help achieve Zero Hunger.” She added, “we are very proud that he was able to win this international contest and bring recognition to Sri Lanka.”
