A total of 181,126 candidates who sat the G.C.E. Advanced Level Examination 2019 have been qualified for university entrance this year as compared to 167, 907 candidates who qualified last year, as per the results released online by the Examinations Department on Friday (27).
Sachini Wijewardena of Visakha Vidyalaya, Colombo is island first from the new syllabus Science stream while Tharusha Shihan Fonseka of Ananda College, Colombo, is the island first rank from the new syllabus Maths stream.
Darshana Isurusiri Sampath from Pinnawala National School secured island first position in the old syllabus Maths stream. Teshani Weliagamage of Devi Balika Vidyalaya, Colombo is island first in the new syllabus Arts stream while Nipuna Viraj Hettiarachchi of Bandaranaike College, Gampaha is island first under the old syllabus Arts stream. Vinura Osanda Gallage of Bandaranaike College, Gampaha is island first in the new syllabus Engineering Technology stream.
Teshani Nimsara Hettige of Bishop’s College, Colombo is island first in the new syllabus Commerce stream, while Niroshan Sandaruwan Jayasinghe of Christ Church Boys’ College, Baddegama is island first in the old syllabus Commerce stream.
According to Examinations Department sources, 337,704 candidates sat the G.C.E A/L Examination held this year from August 5 to 31 in 2,678 examination centres islandwide. Of the 4,789 candidates sat the exams as private candidates. Of the total number, 244,146 candidates sat the examinations under the old syllabus and 198,229 candidates sat under the new syllabus.
The results of the G.C.E. A/L Examination 2019 were released online on Friday (27).
The reports said a total of 181,126 candidates are eligible for university entrance. Meanwhile, the results of 71 candidates have been suspended. The closing date for re-correction is January 17, 2020. Therefore, applications to scrutinize 2019 A/L results should be forwarded to the Examinations Department before that date.
Referring to the already released GCE A/L results, Education Minister Dullas Alahapperuma told the Sunday Observer that ten per cent of the students who sat the examination under the Technology stream have been successful.
“We introduced the Technology stream in the hope of reducing the number of students opting for the arts stream. Today we have succeeded in that,” the Minister said.
Of the total number of candidates who passed the examination, the majority are from the arts stream.
Minister Alahapperuma stressed that the country will have an answer for unemployment when the number of candidates who pass in the Technology stream reaches 25 per cent.
Commissioner General of Examinations Sanath B. Poojitha said that students now have the opportunity to obtain the G.C.E Advanced Level certificates within 48 hours by applying for it through their official website www.doenet.lk and paying either through credit or debit cards. The certificate will be issued at a cost of Rs. 600 and an additional Rs. 200 for postage.
Applications for remarking of papers can also be made now and the relevant information will be available in the Dinamina, Thinakaran, and Daily News newspapers.
